Systems Engineer – Backup/Storage

Systems engineer’s primary responsibility is monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting the company’s backup environments. Secondarily, he is responsible for document backup systems related procedures, policies…etc.
The candidate should be able to work with the other Operations teams such as systems and database administrators, software engineers/QA, technical product managers and vendors on the incidents, tasks and problems.

 

Accountabilities/Responsibility

  • Provide support services for Storage & Backup Infrastructure.
  • Experience with documenting processes and support procedures.
  • Provide on-call assistance for storage & backup related infrastructure/datacenter operations
  • Provide support for infrastructure and application development projects that are related to Backup infrastructure.
  • Monitoring all the devices in storage/backup infrastructure to ensure proactive measures on failures.
  • Maintenance of storage/VTLs/ Tape libraries and associated software at top levels of performance by monitoring version upgrades and maintenance releases to ensure that environment is optimally configured.
  • Works within change management process to ensure that outages are scheduled with minimum impact on clients, but still maintain all hardware and software at optimal levels.
  • Tape/Disk based backup, restoration and audit responsibilities.

 

Technical Competency

  • Experience as a Systems/Storage or Backup engineer (2yrs)
  • Good knowledge on Linux/Windows operating environments.
  • Good knowledge on Symantec/Networker/TSM backup software will be an added qualification.
  • Manage the backup and restoration of systems using enterprise data protection software mentioned above.
  • Installation, administration, configuration change & software maintenance of data protection software.
  • Daily monitoring of scheduled backups of all data protection software (TSM, Networker & NetBackup) and take necessary actions on failed and missed backups.
  • Diagnose platform related issues (server and client side) and provide support in complex, business-critical environment including physical and virtual infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of storage administration and the concepts of file systems, disk partitions, mounts, quotas, mirroring and sizing.
  • Evaluates and applies software/firmware upgrades and support packs as required to solve problems and to ensure the system integrity and the compliance.

 

Educational & Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Networking or Engineering or Equivalent professional qualification.
  • Certifications on RedHat Linux/Microsoft Windows.
  • Certifications on EMC Networker, Veritas NetBackup & Tivoli Storage Manager will be an added qualification.

  • Should have very good verbal & written communication skills.
  • Should be willing to work on extended and irregular hours when required.
  • Strong self-starter, motivated to help TEAM in their deliverables.
  • Ability to work on multiple simultaneous tasks in parallel and prioritize between them
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to any given situation.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
