Systems Engineer - Virtualization

The Virtualization Engineer is primarily responsible for managing all Virtual environments, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting the production /non Production servers.  Secondarily, the incumbent will be responsible for escalation training of other groups.  The incumbent will also be responsible for general reporting responsibilities as assigned. The engineer determines the severity of issues (triage), prioritizes issues, performs diagnosis of system and software components to identify root cause, and takes or recommends corrective action for resolution.

The engineer will work with other Systems team members, Operations team, database administrators, software engineers/QA, technical product managers and vendors to clearly state problems, troubleshoot, diagnose and/or resolve complex technical issues
.

Accountabilities / Responsibilities

  • Vmware administration in the areas of design, implementation, capacity planning, maintenance.

  • Administering heterogeneous production environments on various hardware

  • Expert knowledge in designing and deploying virtualized infrastructure in VMware environment.

  • Working experience with vSphere systems administration and support includingVMotion, HA, DRS, VDS,VCenter, storage  migrations and P2V Migrations

  • Experience with vSphere problem determination and root cause analysis.

  • Working experience with VMWare vSphere5.

  • Working experience with vSphere Thin Provisioning, Resource Pools, Host Profiles, Storage plug-ins

  • Working experience with vSphere Standard and Distributed Switches

  • Working experience with vSphere power shell scripts.

  • Working experience with configuring and deploying VMware ESX on UCS/Blade servers.

  • Working experience with Templates and Customization Specifications.

  • Good understanding of related storage technologies e.g. SAN & NAS storages

  • Experience with high availability and disaster recovery solutions and tools including clustering, load balancing, etc

  • Ability to operate across multiple projects concurrently and assume the responsibility for the appropriate technical and architectural implementation of projects

  • Self-motivated who takes initiative and works well in a team environment with the ability to meet deadlines on time.

  • Analyzes system performance, modifying parameters to improve throughput and effectively utilize system resources. Monitors resource usage, making required adjustments

  • Participates in on-call production support activities. Is expected to have the technical knowledge and capability to handle all problems that may be arise

  • Coordinates activities with vendors as required

  • Responsible for accurately estimating and planning activities within the domain to provide the necessary input into the project managers for developing an end to end plan under the direction of the manager

  • Ability to manage concurrent projects.

  • Physical installation of equipment (racking, cabling), OS installation, network configuration of individual machines,

  • Analyze Problems & find solutions or escalate to appropriate Vendors for resolution

Educational & Professional Qualifications

  • VMware Certified Professional 5 – Data Center Virtualization (VCP5-DCV)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field, or similar discipline.

  • ITIL Foundation Certification

  • Should be able to work independently with minimum supervision from onsite locations.
